Traditional Energy Sources...
Traditional sources of energy are the sources historically used to produce electricity for Virginians. These include coal, nuclear and natural gas. While they are called “traditional” because they have provided the bulk of the nation’s electricity for many decades, the technology behind each one is constantly improving. They are becoming more efficient, reducing their relative environmental footprints.
According to the U.S. Department of Energy, more than 78 percent of Virginia’s electricity is generated using coal and nuclear. Another 18 percent comes from natural gas and oil.
While supporting the development of renewable sources, Virginians for Reliable Energy believes traditional generating sources will continue to provide a majority of the states electricity for many years to come. We also support ongoing research into the development of technologies that allow us to use traditional energy sources in cleaner, more efficient ways, and create job opportunities for many Virginians.
